Peter picked a peck of peppers and a pattern!!

That would be how Michelle, Stacey, and I decided to kick off our weekend. They both brought over many books, and we spent a few hours pouring through them, looking for the perfect patterns for our pals.

Personally, I've been stuck trying to find a pattern and some yarn that I think my pal might like... and decided that I needed to either find a pattern, then go shopping for yarn, or find the yarn, then go shopping for a pattern. trying to do both at once doesn't work for me.

Yarn Party

Yarn Party
Originally uploaded by queenmaxine.
I got my yarn on thursday and cast on to try a pattern I liked. I specifically put away everything except this project which I left in the middle of the coffee table.

I walked in the door from work to find my DW untangling Lilli Munster from the project. Lilli is a Yorkie puppy who cannot get up on the coffee table. Her partner in crime is Nola, a MinPin who as a fine affection for any yarn she sees.

They were crated during the day and my DW had gotten home just minutes before me.

I work 1-9 tonight and the hours between 5 and 9 will be perfect for untangling this mess. All part of the therapy. Even in this tangled state, the colors are gorgeous.

Yarn has arrived

This morning I found that the postman had tried (rather unsuccessfully!) to shove a parcel through our letter box. Inside I found a beautifully wrapped pink tissue paper parcel. Inside the tissue paper I found two gorgeous balls of Noro Silk Garden - destined to be my Scarf Pal's scarf.

As my 19 month old daughter would say "nyum, nyum, nyum"!

Contact!

I've received a lovely email from my pal - thanks! It was really nice to wake up this morning and find that message in my inbox.

I've contacted my pal that I'm spoiling and I've even started the scarf. I'm using it as my commuter knit and I can get a full pattern repeat done on my journey into work. That makes these dark mornings far more bearable.

It's been great reading about everyone's excitment and their plans in the posts and I can't wait to see pics of all the scarves. Is it February yet? :-)

It has begun

The casting on has begun. I will finish the casting on tonight and hopefully knit a few rows (how's that for making people think?)

Right below, someone mentioned weather concerns. Since I have a warm weather pal, I'm doing decorative rather than functional. Well, functional too, but mostly decorative. (How's that for also making you think?) Decorative can be used all year round.

Weather or not?

Now comes the fun part of choosing the perfect pattern for my ISE pal. For those of you who have been assigned an ISE pal who lives on the other side of the world where it may not be winter in February, what kind of scarf will you make? Will you make a summer weight or indoor scarf or will you make a wintery scarf if your recipient lives in a country where there is colder weather at some time of the year (even if it isn't cold in February)?
Thanks for any feedback on this!

Celia's November Update

I ended upwalking away from spinning class tonight away with about 100g of mohair which I will card and spin softly, very very softly, for my scarf exchange pal. I hope it will be soft enough for her. I am aiming for no itch. I think I will see whether it passes Chris' 'no-itch' test before deciding. If this doesn't work, I will buy some merino/silk blend and spin that. That is definitely 'no-itch'.

What do you think?

Yeah - I have my assignment

And I can't wait to get started!!! Thanks to all who set this up. - kat

w00t!

I got my person! And my yarn!

The moment I got my person I went down to the LYS and searched for the perfect yarn! It's Blue Sky Bulky in white, and I LOVE it! The problem is I can't find a single pattern that might work with it. Grr.

Does anyone here have any good super-chunky scarf patterns?
I just ordered a button of Margaret Stowe 100% merino lace, to a certain extent because it was on sale at US$12/20g, and 300yds is enough enough for one scarf. Obviously, I have decided to knit lace, so I chose a solid colorway because I think lace comes out nicer that way. I was not ecstatic with the results of the FBS I knitted with variegated yarn ... the lace pattern got lost somewhere in the colours. I am using a Magaret Stowe pattern from my own collection.

Problem is, after hitting the check-out button I went web surfing for other lace yarns ... and I found Jaggerspun Zephyr (8.00/2oz), Misti alpaca lace (5.95/1.75oz ... wow!) and some kid mohair yarns: Filatura (10.00/25g, Madil 13.95/25g, K1C2 10.95/25g), and it's made me wonder whether I have chosen the right yarn.

I almost ordered the yarn from Fiddlesticks because I was getting a shawl pattern, but they are charging US$16.95 for the merino lace and US$12.95 for the Zephyr. Has anyone knitted with any of these yarns?

I still have to find the right yarn for the hat, but I think I have found the pattern.

Angel Scarf

Hi all,

I did not recieve my scarf from my pal in Scarf Exchange 1. I think she may have shot through. Cynthia and Celia (the great girls they are) organised for me to get a scarf from the "Scarf Angel". I have recieved it and it is so beautiful - thanks so much to you guys. And a VERY big thanks to the ANGEL you have made my day!!!!.

Thanks to all involved - I appreciate it so much and can't wait to start spinning for my new pal.

When my camera is fixed, I will take a photo and post it to show off!

Hope everyone is enjoying their scarved from ISE1 - and looking forward to their new ones.

Thanks again JO

I have a person to knit for!

Yay! Because with the holidays coming up.... I don't have enough to knit? lol! I made a trip to my LYS yesterday to look at patterns and yarn. Haven't bought anything yet, but I'm formulating a plan in my head! I think I know which yarn I'm going to use. Now just to find a great pattern to show it off!

The funny thing is that my ISE SP has the same first name as my SP6 SP! I had to take a second look at the email because I almost thought it was the same person. Now THAT would have been amazing.

YIPPIE

YIPPIE I got my scarf pal. Cant wait to go shopping, one of the best parts of knitting (hehe). OHHH NOO now to pick a pattern and try and knit it. Being a newish knitter I hope I dont end up frogging the whole thing over and over again.

Bought my yarn

Cynthia knew I was going to be yarn crawling last Saturday, so she was sweet and emailed me my secret pal's info beforehand so I could pick out some yarn while I actually had a chance to touch and feel.

I was going to be a good girl with my budget and wait to actually BUY the yarn until after the holidays, but seeing as how I found so little of what I really wanted to buy for myself on the yarn crawl, I just bought it while I was there.

So, here's what I'm going to use:

It's Karaoke by Southwest Trading Company in Mermaid Mix.

I know what pattern I'm going to make, too, but I'll save that information until the end, so y'all can just enjoy watching it develop.

Assignments are OUT.

All the scarf only (and I suspect all the scarf set) assignments have been emailed out to ALL participants. If you have not received an email with the details of who you are to knit FOR then please email us here IMMEDIATELY.

Thanks to all the participants for being gracious and patient. I'd have preferred to thank everyone via personal email, but a girl in school only has so much free time. So far, everything is running really smoothly... i'm glad to hear that so many of you are excited about your matches!!!

Doing the Happy Dance

That's my feet doing the happy dance since I got my pal! Now I've chosen the yarn already (I have a darned good stash) and now I just need to choose the pattern.

Woohooooo...!

Glad to have gotten my SP email and questionaire. Now I have to wait until Thursday to go to my LYS. It is a matter of me being off today, them being closed, me not off again until Thursday. But I have several patterns to ponder. I plan to challenge myself, which as a new knitter won.t take much.

Hope my recipient has an artistic eye! Or a sense of humor?

I am confident my scarf will turn out just marvelous.

Really.

Monday, November 14, 2005

So I was a little *nE*rv*oUS*...

because I'm a newish knitter, and I didn't want to let my secret pal down, but I just read her blog and she sounds very cool and very open to whatever I dream up! Commence yarn shopping!

So I wasn't going to start it yet...

No, really, I was going to be ever so good and get all my other WIPs finished first... HAH! I cast on this evening!!!

YEAH!!

I got my pal I am so excited! I have to go shopping now!! Thank you Celia and Cynthia for all your hard work!!

lets get it started in here!

I received my pal this morning! How exciting! Her questionnaire was full of ideas, too, which is great. Makes me think I should have put more info into mine as well! Oh well, you know what they say about hindsight...

I guess a shout out to whomever got me as a pal: if you would like more info, just email away!

All excited

I just received my scarf pal today. I am so excited! I have some merino top dyed in just the perfect colour for this pal. I think I will spin it up and knit the scarf for her. Progress pictures later.

So excited

I've got someone to knit for, I've got someone to knit for :-) And I like her sort of colours, so that will be easy :-)

Sorry I was so impatient earlier - I'm so happy now I've got someone! (Just got be be disciplined and get all the Christmas projects out of the way first...)

Yip

I just got my partner... and it was a good thing I was sitting down!!!! It is someone with a famous blog and I've been reading her stuff with a passion for months now... I can not believe that I get to knit a scarf for someone FAMOUS LOL. I've already shot off a mail to my not-so-local-yarn-shop with her wishes, likes and dislikes.
I'm going to pour over my books and come up with something for her. This is soooooo exciting!!!

Cheers Eva

What a great job

Thanks Celia and Cyncyn - can't wait for my match - should be great! Am poised ready to spin up some yummy stuff (if that's what my match would like).....I know what hard work goes into setting these things up.

9 . fibres you hate/allergies
I'm not terribly keep on the feel of many novelty yarns against my skin.
10. prefered scarf length
I am 5'3". So it shouldn't be too long. The bigger issue is that I have little neck - so a bulky scarf would make me look like a floating head. If you use a bulkier yarn, I recommend making a narrower scarf.

10. prefered scarf length - at least 5', not big on short knitted scarves.

surprise me
15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf) I really don't like the look of crochet except for an afghan. If possible, I'd prefer knitted. And at the risk of sounding like a huge snob, I've
had just about enough of the fun fur, frilly scarf look. I probably lean towards more elegant looking items.

I live in California, where it gets chilly but not freezing cold. I'd love
something light weight, a nice accent for a sweater or jacket. I am a
knitter, so receiving something crocheted would be fine - nice change of
pace.

HAT- Brianne's questionnaire

1. Name & blogger handle: Brianne/A Journey Beyond Boredom

4. blog URL: http://ajourneybeyondboredom.blogspot.com/

6. Colours you like: Muted colors. I love marine and French blues, sage greens, soft purples, buttery yellows, and creams. Surprisingly, I also really like barn red and White is always fine, as is black and grey.

7. colours you hate: I’m not big on really bright colors. Nothing fluorescent.

8. fibres you like : I love merino and even cotton blends are fine.

9 . fibres you hate/allergies: I have very sensitive skin and so I can’t wear anything acrylic or really scratchy wool. The rule for wool seems to be that if it felts really well, I can’t wear it. I’m also allergic to alpaca. (It’s a cruel world when a knitting girl can’t wear alpaca!)

10. prefered scarf length: I like loooong scarves. I’m 5’6” and when I make scarves I tend to make them long enough that if I hold it above my head it almost hits the floor.

11. head circumference (only if applicable): 22”

12. width of hand at widest point (only if applicable)

13. solid or variegated?: Solids, please.

14. cables or lace?: Either!

HAT- Kim's questionnaire

1. Name & blogger handle---Kim Callan (Kim in NJ)

4. blog URL---don't have a blog; in fact, I'm still figuring out how to post to this blog!

6. Colours you like---I like most colors and I even like a lot of colors together; favorites include blues and purples, jewel tones, but I also like pastels. I love interesting combinations like teal and purple, or shades of color running into each other.

7. colours you hate---well, hate is a strong word, but I'm less fond of the earthy colors---browns, olive, khaki, etc. I don't like the more subdued or what I think of a "muddier" colors. Also, although I like red, I don't wear too much of it close to my face cause I'm pretty ruddy and I don't like to accentuate that.

8. fibres you like---I'm easy; I like most natural fibers---wool, mohair, silk, alpaca, cashmere, cotton (nothing too heavy/stretched out though), and even a good many synthetics like microfiber, rayon, good-quality acrylics (that don't pill really easily), or any kinds of blends.

9 . fibres you hate/allergies---I'm not allergic to anything, but please no scratchy wool (ie, something like naturespun or lambs pride is fine; something like Blackwater Abbey yarns---although I love their colors, is too itchy to wear near the skin) or linen (I know it softens eventually, but I just don't like it). Please also no fun fur or other eyelash yarn, because I went into a bit of a fun-fur frenzy a couple of years ago and now have waaaay too many fun fur scarves as it is ;-)

10. prefered scarf length---I'd love a long scarf that would go to my knees, wrap around my neck a couple of times and go back to my knees. Narrow is fine. But I can also understand if you aren't up to making a "Dr. Who" scarf ;-). And I like surprises, so I'm also open to other things if my pal wants to make something different (ie, lace or some kind of pattern/fiber that doesn't lend itself to long for asthetic or financial reasons). *Please,* though, no short keyhole scarves---I'm ample-sized and they just don't work for me. Nothing shorter than about 36".

11. head circumference (only if applicable)---23" or 23.5" (I found it hard to measure; I have kind of a big head, though)

12. width of hand at widest point (only if applicable)

13. solid or variegated?---Either, though if it doesn't have an interesting stitch pattern, I'd prefer multi-colored or variegated.

14. cables or lace?---Again, either/both/none is fine with me.

15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf)A crocheted scarf is fine with me. I also crochet, but I'm planning to knit the hat and scarf for my pal. Not sure what other info helps: I have 3 cats, a lizard, and a teapot collection. I love old-fashioned things (I once crocheted snoods for myself and a friend to wear to a production of "Little Women").

HAT- Guin's questionnaire

1. Name & blogger handle- Guin (Guin)

4. blog URL- http://www.octagonfudge.blogspot.com

6. Colours you like
I love rich, vibrant colors. I'm really digging pumpkin, green, purple, and red right now. The ol' standby black is okay. My coat is bright green, if you want to get matchy!

7. colours you hate
I don't like pastels or white. It just doesn't work with me. I don't wear much brown, either. I don't HATE it, I just don't wear it alot. And Grays usually make me look super washed out, unless it is a nice, dark gray with an undertone of something else.

8. fibres you like
I love natural fibers- merino, wool, silk, alpaca, bamboo, etc, or some blend thereof. Cotton's not bad either, but it's not very warm....

9 . fibres you hate/allergies
I don't like acrylic (unless it's a blend, and then, only sometimes...) Fun fur is the bane of my existence. Wool is usually okay (something like Cascase 220 is fine, I use that quite a bit) unless it's very VERY scratchy (Lopi, I'm looking at you!), and then I can't wear it.

10. prefered scarf length
I prefer very long scarves, or at least about 5 feet long. I'm not very big, but I like the drama.

11. head circumference (only if applicable)
Hmm...have to get back to you on this.

12. width of hand at widest point (only if applicable)
That too.

13. solid or variegated?
Either! I like variegated when it's monochromatic the best. Unless it's some awesome colors put together. That "magic knitting" stuff, the fiar isle yarn, I'm not too into. Kettle-dyed-type-stuff is very nice!

14. cables or lace?
Both! Or either! I like lace a whole bunch though. But cables....so nice on a hat or mittens....

15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf)
I s'pose I wouldn't mind...but I'd sure like something knitted. For mittens? I really like the convertible-type, cause I'm always yanking them off for something. For hats? I like girly ones. With flowers. Sometimes. No ear flaps, pretty please! I look five! And I'm not!
If I sound picky, well, I'm really not. It's just a pain to try and wade through 11,345,867 patterns without a CLUE what that person wants. This I know. But seriously, you make something, and I will wear it to DEATH. Til it's shreds hanging from my poor wee neck. Because YOU MADE IT for ME. And that means everything

11. head circumference (only if applicable)

12. width of hand at widest point (only if applicable)

9 . fibres you hate/allergies – most acrylics, eyelash, anything fuzzy/furry novelty
10. prefered scarf length – long

15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf) – I’ve got some fabulous mohairs & angoras in my stash– Anny Blatt, Berger du Nord, and other french yarns that I have small amounts of (in other words, not sweater quantities) that I’d love to share and knit a scarf for someone who loves mohair. I’m knitting one right now out of a Berger du Nord mohair blend (pic is on my blog) for my sons girlfriend, and will have enough of that yarn for another scarf, so if possible to pair me with someone who likes soft wools and mohairs that would be wonderful.

Scarf only: Selina (two socks)

1. Name & blogger handle

Selina Lee - (e-mail handle I use is usually Two-Socks)

2. Scarf only please

4. Blog: knit2socks.blogspot.com

6. Colours you like

I like any. I like unique construction and enjoy viewing creativity, like any work of art.

7. colours you hate

None really.

8. fibres you like

I confess I like luxury fibers (I own a store bought Cashmere scarf), but I'm a bargain shopper, too. I honestly do not have much experience knitting with various fibers, but I love really soft fabric. Like all beginners, I'm starting on acrylic for now which I'm turning into a purse. I've already started searching for alpaca blends for a future scarf project though. :)

9 . fibres you hate/allergies

I do not have any allergies that I know of. I don't particularly hate any fiber.

10. prefered scarf length

I like a typical scarf length. I don't really care for short scarves.

13. solid or variegated?

I'll leave it up to the knitter.

14. cables or lace?

It can be with or without. Cables, lace, or just any pattern the knitter chooses.

15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf)

I'm a fairly newbie knitter so I haven't developed my prejudices yet, I suppose. I usually wear black coats, but I do have a pink leather jacket, a brown colored coat, and a rich dark red colored cashmere/wood coat. I don't know if this information will help the knitter or not, but hopefully that will provide some starting point ideas on color choices. However, the knitter is free to choose whatever color he/she desires.

6. Colours you like
browns, greys, blue/greens, purples (more on the blue side of the
spectrum), olive, garnet, check out my felted stranded bag on my
website for some colors I'm enjoying lately. I've got a couple of
neutral coats, so anything goes.

7. colours you hate
pink (though a rose is nice), magenta, baby blue, yellow, primary
colors (though hate is a strong word).

8. fibres you like
I'm loving baby alpaca lately. Though cotton, wool, cashmere...they're
good too. Soft against my neck and face is important.

9 . fibres you hate/allergies
100% acrylic. Scratchy yarn.

10. prefered scarf length
Long-I like to wrap it around a couple of times.

13. solid or variegated?
Either, stripes-or whatever.

14. cables or lace?
Either are nice.

15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have
a crocheted scarf)
A crocheted scarf would be fine.

Scarf Only: Katherine L.

1. Name & blogger handle...Katherine

2. scarf only

6. Colours you like...I love colors with a lot of depth and saturation.
Browns; deep rich shades of red and pink; moss green; deep pinks and
purples.

7. colours you hate...bright, springy colors. While they can be pretty, they
are not me. Also, pastels.

8. fibres you like...natural fibers...I like wool (superwash is good.) Rowan
and Debbie Bliss are used in heavy rotation. I especially like the
cashmerino blends and merino and silk blends. I also have gotten into
fabrics with a tweed appearance. If you have a blend that you think is
really pleasant to work with, use that. Use what makes your hands happy!!
9 . fibres you hate/allergies...allergic to angora. Am not a huge fan of
fabrics with a ton of halo. I do not like novelty yarns (feathers and the
like). For scarves I am not overly fond of super scratchy yarns, but a
little scratchiness is fine.
10. preferred scarf length...maybe long enough to wrap around my neck at
least once? My favorite way to wear scarves is to fold it in half, put it
around my neck, and then pull the ends through the loop.
13. solid or variegated? Doesn't matter
14. cables or lace? I think I prefer cables
15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a
crocheted scarf)...Can't think of too much else...have fun!! Can't wait to

Scarf only: Leslie

1. Name & blogger handle
Leslie Graff/Leslie - I think I'm listed as LeslieG
2. scarf only
4. blog URL
sfsaga.blogspot.com
6. Colours you like
blues, purples, greens, pinks, greys and neutrals; My winter coats are mostly black or pink. I’m shopping for a light tan or camel coat at the moment.
7. colours you hate
orange, yellow, bright red, neons or things that are really bright; I don’t really have a coat to match “autumn” colors – rusts, browns, etc.
8. fibres you like
Anything natural – wool, alpaca (love, love, love alpaca), etc. Cotton is okay, but not crazy about it for a scarf. Some synthetics are okay, but I don’t like a lot of novelty yarns. I especially like fibres that are indicative of special places. I would be very excited to receive a scarf from a farm or producer near my pal’s home or from a yarn that is special to my pal.
9 . fibres you hate/allergies
Novelty yarns, especially eyelash yarns. Anything too scratchy to wear against the skin. Most wool, mohair, etc. doesn’t bother me so as long as my pal thinks it could be worn against the skin, I’m sure it will be great.
10. prefered scarf length
No real preference here. I like the short styles that button (Flora from Knitty) as well as longer scarves that can be wrapped around my neck. My current favorite scarf is 64 inches long to give you a sense of what works for me.
13. solid or variegated?
No real preference, but I generally go for solids or variegated yarns that are subtle.
14. cables or lace?
Love ‘em both! I like small details in scarves. I think it’s these little things that really make a handknit scarf so much more than just a way to keep out the chill. My style tends to be pretty traditional so I like interesting stitches to dress up the basics.
15. miscellaneous info (including if you would like the chance to have a crocheted scarf)
I love knits that are special to the knitter. If I could tell my pal anything, I’d ask for a scarf that had some special meaning to the knitter. I’d enjoy something made from yarn that’s local or maybe someone’s favorite yarn to use. I’d really enjoy hearing why my pal chose her (or his) project.

SCARF ONLY

BLOG URL: deesie.typepad.com/skein

NICE COLOURS: For the scarf for me (thinking practically) I like most
colours. Reds, blues, purples, black, autumnal colours.

NOT NICE COLOURS: (Mainly for practical and matching reasons) white,
pastels, barbie pink, fluorescent neon like colours, yellow, bright green.
For the scarf which I will be knitting, any colour except yellow is fine.

FIBRES FOR ME: Anything that is soft next to the skin, and I prefer natural
rather than man made fibres (acrylic) though blends are great. The main
factor is that the scarf not be scratchy next to skin.

FIBRES I HATE AND ALLERGIES. No allergies at all. I am not keen on
acrylics that squeak.

SCARF LENGTH - (for me) - depends on style. I usually wear ascot style
scarves or seamen's scarves so about 40" but if it's one that wraps around
the neck, it would be longer - about 60" (pure guesswork here) and if it's a
triangular scarf, then it doesn't matter.

SOLID OR VARIEGATED: Not bothered at all. If it's a lace or textured scarf,
probably a solid colour or very slightly variegated - let the patterning do
the work!

CABLES OR LACE: Not bothered. Love both.

ADDITIONAL INFO: I like a surprise. I don't fit into any fixed
colour/style/pattern so I leave it up to the knitter. I don't mind
crocheted scarves, but might draw the line at doing a crocheted one myself
for my recipient!

SCARF THAT I WILL KNIT: I don't mind at all. Any fibre, any length, any
colour except yellow. I do colour (sometimes) texture and lace, with a
small amount of crochet.

Being impatient

I really want to be good and patient, and wait for our lovely hardworking organisers to do everything in the time they have available to them, but when can I start getting worried that my questionnaire hasn't been posted up and I haven't got someone to knit for yet?

(Please don't get me wrong, I really am very grateful for all the work that goes into organising something like this, I'm just getting very excited about it, and keep finding new possible scarves to knit...)

Will yahoo punish me????

For hitting the Check Mail button every 30 seconds LOL??? I don't remember what e-mail addy I used to sign up, so I keep checking my many addies to make sure I will not miss the mail with my pal in it.

This is the first post for me... I signed up for the exchange and then I left for a 3 week trip to Oregon. I've been back for nearly a week, but as usual the time change does me in. I'm sleeping all over the place. I keep oversleeping, not hearing the 3 alarms that go off and things like that. Good thing that I'm not starting work anytime soon :)

I've got a few vague ideas of what I might do. I've been knitting since february, but never knitted a scarf before LOL. I started with a sweater and then went on to lace knitting. I do suffer from sever startitis and have a lot of trouble finishing things (that's probably why I've got a lonely sock in my handbag for the past 3 months...).

Okay, I've jabbered enough... off to check my mails again :)

Cheers y'all and looking forward to this exchange!!!

Dreaming of Merino Scarves

I haven’t received my person yet, but it hasn’t stopped me from thinking/planning the assignment. :) I was at spinning group today and it’s at The Fold in Marengo, IL, which is like a spinner’s candy store. I saw some lovely – super soft 100% Merino. Even DH remarked at how soft this merino top is. If my person isn’t allergic to wool, I hope to use this for their scarf. I got it in white and will dye it after it’s spun into any color the person likes. I think tonight I’m going to start perusing some fancy stitch patterns.
